It’s a common problem faced by our clients who have suction style pump set-ups installed in their properties. These can be used in domestic and commercial applications across Adelaide and the Adelaide Hills. A suction pump such as the Davey Dyna Prime 201 would be used to assist the transfer of liquids from a septic settling tank and then pump the liquids up to a street sewer connection.
It is the operation of a crucial piece of equipment which no bodies see’s and this is called the “foot valve”. The foot valve is connected to the bottom of the suction pipe which is located towards the bottom of the tank itself. The foot valve opens during suction from the pump and closes immediately upon suction no longer being performed. What this does is maintain the pumps water seal or otherwise known as the pumps prime. When we often get a call because a pump is not sucking properly it can quite often be related to a faulty foot valve which in turn creates an air lock and stops the pump from suctioning liquid correctly.
The problem with this fault is that the pump can quickly overheat and cause the motor to burn out leading to a new pump installation or pump repair. A faulty foot valve can be caused through hard particles being sucked into the foot valve due to poor maintenance of the primary tank and also a damaged diaphragm rubber inside the filter cage also caused due to poor maintenance of the primary tank (septic tank). Items we have found in the past to obstruct a foot valve are ear bud cleaners, latex items such as disposable gloves and dense sludge.
The only way a foot valve can be inspected is by disconnecting the suction line from the pump and removing the pipe from the sump itself. This pipe is usually around 2 metres long and requires careful removal (it will typically be connected via a barrel union which allows for easier disconnection) otherwise the suction pipe can be dropped into the pit and become lost. When it comes to any type of pump repairs in Adelaide or the Adelaide Hills suburbs, we always recommend all work be performed by a licensed pump repairer. If you need any type of assistance we can have a licensed technician out to your home typically the same day and we also provide and after hours emergency service for when the situation is a little more urgent. We work with all brands of pumps such as Davey, Onga, Grundfos, Reefe, HyJet, Flowserve and Zenox Contact 0429 361 819 for any help.
