This week I started a laundry/toilet renovation in Hurtle Square in the city. Starting a project like this is always quite labour intensive as it involves the demolition of the original tiling and fixtures. All this work is done in house by Mayfair Plumbing and Gasfitting, we use all of our trades to get the whole entire project completed. This week I was lucky enough to have a turn on the huge Makita Jack hammer and removed all of the old tiles from the walls and the floors. You never really know how well the old tiles will come off, sometimes they just chip off nicely and sometimes the wall and floor needs patching after wards, each job is different.
In this case at Hurtle Square, the floor tiles came up quite well and only localised patching was needed, but with the wall tiles because the property is solid brick they had rendered the walls to attach the tiles to and all off this render came off with the tiles meaning the walls had to be rendered before the new tiles could be re installed.
Before any of the new render is installed the plumbing pipes need to be altered to give this renovation a much more modern feel. The original taps where located above the bench top and so where the washing machine points, these days most people like to see all of the plumbing concealed bellow benches or inside cupboards. In this situation it involved chasing out the bricks and making channels to lower the copper pipes. If the walls had been gyprock, performing this task is a lot easier and just involves dropping the pipes inside the cavity of the wall.
Once all this prep work is performed its then onto the tiling, in this situation we have gone with a nice large 300 x 600 gloss white wall tile and for the floor we have selected a non-slip 300 x 300 white floor tile. The walls will also get a splash of white paint giving this whole room a complete ultra-modern look and feel.
As far as fixtures and fittings are concerned a new close coupled toilet suite will be installed, getting rid of the old 11 litre single flush toilet suite and now installing a dual flush 3/4.5 litre flushing cistern and toilet. A new corner vanity unit will be installed giving the owners more storage in the toilet room and a mixer style tap over the basin. The laundry will get a 42 litre stainless steel sink and a cupboard also with a mixer style tap. There will be some new brighter light fittings installed and also some chrome rails for both toilet rolls and towels.
A project such as this one above usually takes approximately 2 weeks from start to finish the transformation during this short period is simply amazing and can be achieved over such a short period. We tailor the renovation to suit your budget leaving you with so many options.
