Changes to free standing natural gas meter outlet connections in Adelaide, with the recent introduction of the "10 Light Fitting" for all new gas meter installations.
There still seems to be a lot of Gasfitters in Adelaide and across South Australia that are not across the changes which came into place in February 2015 for the installation of all new domestic free standing natural gas meters (i.e. not fixed enclosures or wall boxes).
The current free standing meter outlet connection with the rubber olive, plastic 1" nut and aluminium hoop is being phased out and the meter is now being supplied with a new fitting known as a "10 light fitting" (in picture below). The 10 light fitting is a 3/4" threaded liner BSP, a cap nut and a flat washer when supplied from new.
When installing the new consumer gas pipe work to the new free standing meter the gas fitter must now construct the old style of hoop connection to the gas meter from the consumers new pipe out of either copper or galv (in picture below). When constructing this connector piece it must replicate the old aluminium hoop the best as possible, so it is requested that the plumber get the new hoop connection in a tight radius, similar to that of the old hoop connection and as tight as physically possible (90mm from center to center maximum) (in picture below).
The new 10 Light Fitting is 3/4" MI in size at the point where the gas plumber will connect onto it, a reducing bush is required for the gas fitter to then get back to the size of the first leg of the consumer mains, unless of course the consumer mains is only 3/4" in size which is pretty rare in Adelaide as majority of natural gas lines are either 1", 1 and 1/4" or perhaps 1 and 1/2" so a reducing bush is most definitely needed.
If you are a plumber in Adelaide who is licensed to work with natural gas this is an important piece of information to have stored away in your head as there are still huge rebates on offer to the public to have natural gas installed to there property so you are sure to come across a free standing meter in the very near future.
